The Virginia Wings, one of the most entertaining teams to ever "lace 'em up" in Major League Roller Hockey are returning to the fray. League officials have announced that the team will play as
"Virginia's team" in a number of Virginia venues, principally at The Box in Chantilly, VA.
At one time, the Wings were the poster boys of MLRH, attracting huge crowds to their Winchester, VA arena. In their initial season, the Wings went 0-18 while attracting the leagues biggest crowds. The following season brought the arrival of Tomas Kolin and Lukas Andrejas from the Czech Republic
and Chuck Foster, one of the most colorful characters to ever coach in MLRH. The Wings never won a championship but the combination of two big time international players and a
cast of underskilled local players made for a delightful and entertaining year.
The team was sold the following year and the new ownership group was unable
to recreate the magic, alienating the fans. The league assumed control of the
team but Winchester VA was deemed too small to support a team in recent
years. With the launch of the new MLRH2 league, league officials believe
the time is right to relaunch the Wings program with a full compliment of
teams playing in MLRH2, AA and AA Divisions.
Virginia will play in the MLRH South with North Carolina, the South Carolina Buccaneers, Florida Fusion, Myrtle Beach Manta Rays and Atlanta.
